Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Announced as a Theatrical Release
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is a prequel to the film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which was released on January 26, 2024. The new work is based on a scenario written by series composition writers Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita during the planning stage of SEED FREEDOM.
Fukuda wrote on X, “This had existed as an OVA project even before SEED FREEDOM, but it has now been announced in the form of a theatrical release. The storyboards for the first half were drawn more than 10 years ago, but they have been polished in many ways compared with two years ago. I am very grateful for the many reactions from everyone. Please look forward to the release.”

The Legacy of the Gundam SEED Series
The Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series began airing in October 2002 as a 50 episode television series. It was the first television Gundam series produced in the twenty first century.
The story depicts a war between genetically modified humans known as Coordinators and ordinary humans known as Naturals, who are divided between the military organization ZAFT and the Earth Alliance Forces. Through this war, the suffering and growth of the protagonist Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, are portrayed.
In addition to existing fans, the series attracted many female viewers and recorded a peak audience rating of 8.0 percent. It also sparked a second Gunpla boom, particularly among elementary school students, and became widely popular as a new generation Gundam series.
Its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY, began airing in October 2004 and recorded a peak audience rating of 8.2 percent, surpassing the previous work. The series has sold more than 4 million packaged units in total and became a major hit across Japan, expanding beyond the framework of a television anime series into music, events, and more.
Released in 2024, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM serves as a sequel to the television anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY. It depicts a new story involving Kira, Athrun, Shinn, and others in a world where conflict continues. The film became a major hit, surpassing 5 billion yen at the box office and setting a new record as the highest grossing film in the Gundam movie series.
