Masako Nozawa, Voice of Son Goku, Becomes First Voice Actor with a “Star Handprint,” Jokes She Couldn’t Attend Due to a “Job Saving the Earth”
Masako Nozawa, the legendary voice actor best known as the voice of Son Goku, has become the first voice actor to receive a handprint in the “Star Handprints” display at Asakusa Public Hall in Tokyo. On March 14, Nozawa appeared via video message at the Reiwa 7 “Star Handprint” Award Ceremony held at Asakusa Public Hall in Tokyo.

The “Star Handprints” project was established by Taito City to honor individuals who have contributed to the development of popular entertainment. Handprints and signatures of awardees are installed at the venue so their achievements can be preserved for future generations. Nozawa was selected as the first voice actor to receive the honor.
Although she was unable to attend the ceremony in person due to work commitments, a video message from Nozawa was played during the event.
“I have been informed that my handprint will be added to the Star Handprints displayed at Asakusa Public Hall. It is truly an incredible honor. Thank you very much,” she said, expressing her gratitude.
She continued with a playful remark that drew laughter from the audience.
“Normally, I should be there in person to greet you all, but unfortunately I have a job saving the Earth that I absolutely cannot miss today. I am currently on my way there. I hope you will kindly understand.”
Nozawa then reflected on the significance of the honor.
“Asakusa is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. Being selected as a voice actor for the Star Handprints, one of its famous landmarks, makes me deeply feel that Japanese animation and games are loved all over the world.”
She added that the recognition was possible thanks to creators and fans.
“This is all thanks to the creators who have produced and nurtured so many wonderful works and characters, and to the fans who have supported them for many years. I sincerely thank you.”
Concluding her message, she shared her determination for the future.
“My only strength is that I am full of energy. I will continue delivering my voice with all my might, so please keep supporting me.”
