Sanrio Announces Historic Designer Transition for Hello Kitty
On February 10, Sanrio officially announced that the role of Hello Kitty’s lead designer will be passed from the third generation to the fourth. The current designer, Yuko Yamaguchi, has served as the character’s principal designer since 1980 and has played a central role in shaping Sanrio’s character creation for more than four decades.
The announcement was made in the March issue of Ichigo Shimbun, Sanrio’s monthly publication released the same day, as well as on Sanrio’s official web media platform, SanrioTimes. In its statement, Sanrio explained that the baton passing was formally reported in the latest issue of Ichigo Shimbun, confirming the transition of Hello Kitty’s designer from the third to the fourth generation.
Yamaguchi currently holds the position of Director and Head of Character Creation at Sanrio. Since 1980, she has led the creative direction of Hello Kitty, guiding the character’s growth as a globally beloved icon. Sanrio credited her with expanding Hello Kitty’s appeal through initiatives such as autograph events that allowed direct interaction with fans, as well as numerous collaborations with artists and designers both in Japan and overseas.
In addition to Hello Kitty, Yamaguchi has also worked as the lead designer for other Sanrio characters, including Dear Daniel and Charmmy Kitty, further contributing to the company’s character portfolio.
Timing and Background of the Designer Handover
According to Sanrio, the designer transition is scheduled to take place sometime in 2026. The successor will be Aya (pen name), who has supported Hello Kitty alongside Yamaguchi for many years. Sanrio also announced plans to publish a joint interview with both designers in a future issue of Ichigo Shimbun.
The company explained that for its major characters, lead designers are passed on to the next generation after a certain period. The decision regarding Hello Kitty follows this established internal policy. Sanrio expressed its deep gratitude to Yamaguchi for her long standing contributions and stated that she will continue to support the company as an advisor, providing guidance based on her extensive experience and knowledge.
